세도나는 명상가들이 모이는 곳이다. 세계적인 볼텍스(VORTEX) 지역이기 때문이다. 볼텍스는 스프링처럼 솟아오른다는 뜻. 지표에서 강한 자기장 에너지가 표출되는 곳을 볼텍스 지역이라 부른다. 명상가뿐만 아니라, 수많은 예술가, 철학가들이 강한 명상 에너지를 받으러 세도나를 찾는다. 사실 세도나는 한국인들에게 잘 알려지지 않았다. 몇 년 전 <세도나 스토리>라는 책으로 유명해졌다. 저자는 이승헌 글로벌사이버대학교 총장이다. 그는 세도나에 우연히 정착하면서 이곳의 아름다움을 소개했는데 이 책이 뉴욕타임즈 및 LA타임즈, 워싱턴 포스트지 등 미국 유수 언론에서 베스트셀러가 됐다. “세도나는 세계적인 관광지입니다. 연간 4백만명이 넘는 관광객이 찾습니다. 이 도시 메인 스트리트에 한국전참전용사 건립비가 세워집니다.” 한국전쟁 참전용사비가 들어서면서 세도나가 또 화제가 되고 있다. 오는 4월 말에 문을 여는 세도나 용사공원에 미국 육군, 해군, 공군, 해병대 용사 기념비와 함께 한국전쟁 용사비도 함께 세워진다는 것. 한인수가 불과 100여명에 불과하다는 이곳에, 어떻게 10만 달러나 드는 용사비가 세워질 수 있을까. “이승헌 총장이 북애리조나 세도나에 생활하면서 한국전 참전비 건립을 발의했고, 세도나시와 미해병대전우회가 공동으로 건립 프로젝트를 추진했어요.” 임반야 세도나한인회장과 이메일 인터뷰를 진행했다. 임 회장은 “한국전 참전용사 건립비가 참전국에 대한 예우 및 대한민국 위상을 높이는 데 도움이 될 것”이라면서 한국전쟁 참전용사비 프로젝트가 어떻게 진행됐는지를 설명해 주었다. 다음은 일문일답. – 세도나에는 한국전 참전용사들이 많은지. – 세도나한인회가 그동안 참전용사들과 교류를 가져 왔는지. – 현지에 한인들이 많지 않을 텐데, 어떻게 건립비를 모금했나. – 세도나에 왜 명상을 하러 가는 사람들이 많은가. – 그렇다면 이곳 한인들은 대부분 명상가들인가? – 임 회장은 어떤 일을 하는지. – 명상을 어디에서나 해도 상관없는 것 아닐까? 왜 사람들이 인도나 세도나를 찾을까. – 세도나한인회를 소개한다면.

(연합뉴스) 美애리조나주 세도나에 한국전쟁 참전비 건립
(로스앤젤레스=연합뉴스) 권 훈 특파원 = 미국 애리조나주 세도나에 한국전쟁 참전용사비가 들어선다.
28일 (현지시간) 세도나 한인회에 따르면 오는 4월말에 문을 여는 세도나 용사 공원에 미국 육군, 해군, 공군, 해병대 용사 기념비와 함께 한국전쟁 참전 용사비도 자리를 잡는다.
한국전쟁 참전 용사비를 비롯한 용사 공원 설립은 세도나 한인회와 세도나 시, 그리고 미국 해병대전우회가 공동으로 맡았다.
세도나 시는 3천250 제곱 미터(약 980여평)의 부지를 무상으로 내놨고 11만 달러에 이르는 건립 비용은 세도나 한인회와 미국 해병대 전우회가 3년에 걸쳐 마련했다.
세도나 한인회는 각종 행사를 통해 건립 비용 85%를 모금했고 한국 정부의 지원금 1만5천달러도 받았다.
세도나 용사 공원은 2월초에 공사를 시작해 3월말께 완공할 예정이며 4월에 개막 행사를 연다.
한국전쟁 참전 용사비가 들어서는 세도나 용사 공원은 미국에서도 손꼽히는 관광지인 세도나 시내 간선도로에 있다.
미국 유력 일간신문 USA 투데이가 미국에서 가장 아름다운 관광지 1위로 뽑은 세도나는 전 세계에서 연간 4백만명의 관광객이 찾는다.
공원건립위원장을 맡은 임반야 세도나 한인회장은 “한국전쟁 정전 60주년이 되는 올해에 한국전쟁 참전 용사비와 용사 공원이 문을 열게 돼 더 뜻깊다”면서 “애리조나 주정부와 세도나 시, 그리고 한국 국가보훈처의 적극적인 도움에 감사한다”고 말했다.

The Third Annual Lunar New Year’s Celebration
Sedona, Arizona—January 22, 2011
On February 9th the Sedona Korean-American Association will host the third annual Lunar New Year Festival. This unique opportunity for cultural exchange will offer traditional Asian food, games, film, fortune telling and New Year blessings for all visitors and residents of Sedona.
This ancient celebration is observed the first two weeks of the Lunar year, and is enjoyed by billions of people in Asia and Asian communities in North America. This year is the Year of the Snake, which is known as being a time of wealth and wisdom. The holiday kicks off on February 10, 2013 and concludes February 24, 2013. The Lunar New Year festival is a time for families to reunite, elaborate meals, and special ceremonies to honor the family ancestors. The Sedona Korean-American Association (SKAA) is excited to bring a taste of this celebrated Asian holiday to Sedona for its third consecutive year.
The festival will present a variety of cultural experiences for curious Sedona residents and visitors: traditional Asian food, folk games, authentic performances, personal Calligraphy, Lunar Zodiac readings, screening of a Korean film, and a wishing tree available for all guests. Paper cranes containing visitors’ wishes, hopes and plans will be placed on a Wishing Tree and displayed for 15 days, ending in a Full Moon Ceremony, February 25th.
This is a free and public event hosted at the Sedona Meditation Center, located at 340 Jordan Road from 11am to 3pm on February 9th. Banya Lim, president of SKAA, will serve as the master of ceremonies and host of the Korean New Year’s tradition and games. She will also present a message of gratitude to all of the supporters of the “Korean War Veterans’ Monument”, to be unveiled March of this year in the Sedona Veteran Military Park.
Banya shares, “Every year more and more people join this event. Our first year around 150 people participated, whereas last year over 300 people came. We are proud to bring inter-cultural inspiration for this community through this event.”
As the snake is a symbol of wealth and wisdom in many Asian cultures, the year of the snake is meant for steady progress and attention to detail. This bodes well for the Sedona and the Sedona Korean American Association, introducing this tradition during a peaceful year.

한국전쟁 정전 60주년을 맞아 연초부터 한국전 참전용사를 기리는 움직임이 활기를 띠고 있다.
애리조나주 세도나의 베테랑 공원에 오는 3월 한국전 참전용사비가 건립되는 것. 연방의회도 최근 ‘한국전 참전용사의 해’로 지정하는 결의안을 통과시킨데 이어 워싱턴DC 한국전쟁 기념공원에 한국전쟁 당시 전사한 미군 병사들의 이름을 모두 새겨넣은 대형 ‘추모의 벽(Wall of Remembrance)’을 건립하는 방안을 추진하고 있다.
특히 참전용사비 프로젝트는 한국 정부도 지원했다. 지난 19일과 20일 참전용사비 건립과 관련 애리조나 주를 찾은 신연성 LA총영사는 본지와의 인터뷰에서 “세도나 참전용사비 건립을 위해 보훈처에서 작년에 1만5000달러의 예산을 세도나 한인회 측에 보냈는데 곧 결실을 맺게 돼 기쁘다”고 밝혔다.
이 프로젝트는 북애리조나 세도나 한인회가 세도나 시 미 해병대 전우회와 공동으로 추진한 것으로 뉴욕타임스 선정 베스트셀러였던 ‘세도나 스토리’로 유명한 이승헌 국제뇌교육종합대학교 총장의 건의로 2009년 3월 시작됐다. 세도나 한인회와 미 해병대 전우회는 이후 3년에 걸쳐 건립비 모금 활동을 벌여왔다.
임반야 세도나 한인회장은 “애리조나 주 정부 및 세도나 시 주민들 한국전 참전용사 및 국가보훈처의 도움으로 가능한 일이었다”며 “한국전 정전 60주년이 되는 올해에 건립돼 더욱 뜻깊다”고 말했다.
한편 연방의회엔 워싱턴DC의 한국전쟁 기념공원에 추모의 벽을 건립하자는 법안이 발의돼 있다.
랠프 홀(공화.텍사스) 의원 등 20명의 하원의원은 추모의 벽 건립 법안을 지난 18일 공동 발의했다.
추모의 벽에는 한국전에 참전한 미군과 한국군 카투사(KATUSA) 유엔 참전국 병사들 가운데 전사자 부상자 실종자 전쟁포로 등의 숫자도 함께 기록될 전망이다.
특히 법안에는 한국전 참전용사인 찰스 랭글(민주.뉴욕) 존 코니어스(민주.미시간) 샘 존슨(공화.텍사스) 하워드 코블(공화.노스캐롤라이나) 의원 등이 지지 서명을 했다.
이달 초 제113대 의회가 공식 출범한 이후 한국과 직접적인 관련이 있는 법안이 제출된 것은 상.하원을 통틀어 이번이 처음이다.

Highway 89A Sedona, AZ 86336) 될 세도나 베테랑 밀리터리 공원은 3만 5천 스퀘어피트의 부지에 미 육군, 해군, 공군, 해병대 참전용사 기념비 및 해외 참전국으로 유일하게 한국전 참전용사 기념비가 들어선다. 오는 4월 말 개원을 앞두고 한창 공사 및 준비가 진행 중이다.
이번 프로젝트는 북애리조나 세도나 한인회 명예회장이자 ‘세도나 스토리’ 뉴욕타임즈 베스트셀러 저자인 이승헌 총장의 건의로 2009년 3월 시작되었다. 이를 위해 세도나 시에서 싯가 약 2십 8만불의 3만 5천 스퀘어피트의 부지를 기증하였으며, 북애리조나 세도나 한인회와 미해병대 전우회가 함께 지난 3년에 걸쳐 건립비 모금 활동을 벌여왔다. 특히 한인회가 주최가 되어 진행한 켄 베넷 애리조나 상원위원 초청 행사, 음력설 행사 등의 활동은 세도나 주민들의 큰 호응을 받아 건립비 총액의 85% 이상이 모금되었으며, 지난 해 12월 국가보훈처의 보조금 지원이 결정되며 건립에 필요한 모든 모금 활동이 성공적으로 마무리 되었다.
북애리조나 세도나 한인회 회장이자, 공원 건립위원장으로 활약한 임반야 회장은 “애리조나 주 정부 및 세도나 시, 주민들, 한국전 참전용사 및 국가보훈처의 도움으로 가능한 일이었다”며 “한국전 정전 60주년이 되는 올해에 한국전 참전용사비와 베테랑 밀리터리 공원의 건립을 현실화할 수 있게 되어 더 뜻깊다”고 소감을 밝혔다.

Lunar New Year Celebrates “Year of the Snake” at Sedona Meditation Center

Local festivities on Saturday, February 9th at the Sedona Meditation Center will kick off the Year of the Snake for the Lunar New Year celebrated over the span of a week around the world. The Sedona Korean American Association and the non-profit center at 340 Jordan Road in Uptown Sedona will be in full celebration between 11am and 3pm. Chinese, Indian, Thai, and Korean food will be featured at an Asian Food Court, punctuated by a noon performance of Sedona’s Rhythm, a dynamic, synchronized drum corps. Start early with the 10 am showing of a classic, light-hearted Korean movie at 10 am, repeated again at 1:00 pm.
2013 wouldn’t be the Year of the wise Snake – or a year governed by the intuitive element of Water – without a fortune or two being told in the bargain. And it wouldn’t be a Lunar New Year celebration without Asian Calligraphy being put to paper, or paper cranes dangled in a public Wishing Tree. It’s a time to proclaim, “out with the old and in with the new”, and make YOUR vision for the new Year of the Snake come true!

Korea’s most popular TV station broadcasts a 10 minute promotion for Sedona
KBS2 (Korean Broadcasting System), the biggest out of the four major South Korean television networks, recently broadcast a 10 minute segment on Sedona, Arizona. The very popular Korean TV program, “Good Morning Korea”, one of the more famous morning shows in Korea, airing nationwide, (like “Good Morning America” in US), is watched by a large percentage of the 50 million people in South Korea for entertainment and as a way to determine where they should go on their next vacation. With South Korea’s high economic growth, much of the population is traveling abroad and taking in the wonders of the world.
Sedona Korean American Association President, Banya Lim, stated that “these two “Good Morning Korea” segments will definitely be a big impetus in bringing many more Korean visitors to the Sedona area. Every Korean seeing this will put Sedona on their travel-wish-list”.
In addition to being broadcast in South Korea, the 10 minute segment can also be seen on You Tube < http://youtu.be/IUhtAPEAy8A >. Although currently only in Korean (except for the interviews with Sedona residents and visitors), it will shortly have English sub-titles added. The introduction to the segment states (loosely translated) that “A Meditation Healing craze is blowing in the world! In the Western United States go to Sedona. Sedona is located in Arizona! “If God created the Grand Canyon, Sedona is where he lives.””
“Sedona is a place with natural beauty. Particularly spacious, it is reported to be a region of strong magnetic field energy with its Red Rock vortexes; Sedona is for all to hear and feel where you can taste the essence of a refreshing Healing Trip! Let’s overlook the breathtaking beauty of nature. In the United States, Sedona Healing Meditation Energy is Healing the world.”
The TV segment shows Sedona in an extremely popular light. It shows Uptown Sedona very positively, as well as the Red Rock State Park and Bell rock. It has numerous interviews with Sedona residents and visitors and views a “Full Moon” celebration and people from the Sedona Meditation Center meditating near Cathedral Rock.
After the show, “Sedona” ranked as one of the “hot searching key words” in two major search engines in Korea, Naver.com and Daum.net. This means many Koreans, web searched Sedona to know more, after watching the broadcasting. “Sedona(세도나)” hit number 1 in Daum.net and hit number 5 in Naver.com. What a big plus for Sedona.
Hopefully, we can all look forward to many more visitors from Korea in 2013.
